Volunteer Opportunities for High Schoolers

Summer is here! That means a break from the books – at least for a little while. Teenagers – especially college-bound teenagers – can use these coming weeks to develop skills, explore different industries, and give back to their community. A great way to do all three is to volunteer! Here are some resources for students looking for volunteer opportunities in the summer of 2024.

Red Cross

The Red Cross is a global organization that provides medical and disaster relief. For students looking to pursue pre-med or social work tracks, this is an excellent way to get your foot in the door. From the website: “Red Cross youth volunteers learn valuable lessons in how to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, mobilize communities and create positive change. They hone their leadership skills, make new friends, and explore new interests, all in a friendly, encouraging and age-appropriate environment with visible results.” Students can volunteer as an individual, as part of a group, or they can even start their own school chapter of the Red Cross Club.

National Parks

The National Parks Service does so much more than mark hiking trails. NPS is responsible for marine parks, campgrounds, historic buildings, wildlife monitoring, and artistic efforts. For students interested in pursuing ecology, sustainability, and even history, volunteering with NPS can provide experience and open doors. Check out their Citizen Archivist project for something you can do from the comfort of your own home!

YMCA

The YMCA organizes over 230,000 volunteers nationwide, with each local chapter doing community-specific work. Opportunities will vary based on location, but they can be wide-ranging and extremely fulfilling. Some programs include coaching youth sports, translating for those who speak English as a second language, youth tutoring, and summer camp activities. Check out your local chapter to find out how you can give back.

Teen Link

For students looking to pursue a degree in psychology, psychiatry, social work, or counseling, Teen Link provides an array of opportunities to explore the field. From Outreach to Youth Crisis Specialist, this peer-to-peer service connects volunteers with youth experiencing mental health difficulties in Washington state. This organization provides mentorship, learning opportunities, and leadership development. While it is a local opportunity, there are other hotline service opportunities around the country. Search for one closest to you.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit dedicated to providing housing, affordable housing, and housing improvements for those who need it most. Opportunities for youth volunteers abound. Check out the chapter closest to you to find out how you can help. Feeling ambitious? Establish your own high-school chapter, and get organizing!

These are only some of the opportunities available. The best way to find out how you can give back to your community is to ask. People of all ages, careers, and creeds need help, from the domestic violence shelters to the farm. Libraries, schools, hospitals, and veterans’ centers are always looking for an extra set of hands.
